Tunnelling work for the Khidderpore to Victoria Memorial stretch of the Joka–Park Street Metro corridor began on Thursday. The tunnel boring machine was launched from the area in front of St. Thomas School in Khidderpore, marking the beginning of the first phase of underground construction on this alignment. The project is part of the larger expansion of the city’s metro network to connect southern parts of Kolkata with central locations.
According to metro officials, this phase will cover the stretch between Khidderpore and Victoria Memorial. Once completed, the second phase of tunnel boring will begin from Victoria Memorial to Park Street. Engineers are involved in continuous technical monitoring of the boring process to ensure safety and precision in the underground construction.
Metro Rail General Manager Uday Kumar Reddy, who was present at the launch, said, “Today is a very important day for the people of Kolkata. We are starting a project that will ensure fast and easy travel from Behala to Park Street.” He described the project as “a strong step towards the dreams of the city’s residents.”
